Homelessness is a global problem and we have millions of people living worldwide in make-shift shelters made using different types of materials including sheets of plastic or wood or even straw. However, as you might expect these shelters are no long term solutions and can be devastated even with the slightest of wind or rain. London-based Forest YMCA has come up with a concept whereby they are making homes using recycled shipping containers to provide temporary accommodation to young homeless people.
These temporary homes, dubbed mYPad, are being designed by made by Robert Kilgour Architects and Essence Design and include a bathroom, shower, toilet and other basic facilities. Essence Design is however working on the branding and the exterior design of the container homes. Through this eco friendly and useful initiative, Forest YMCA will lease one of these shipping container homes to a homeless person for a cost of 33 percent of the full-time minimum wage.

The idea here is to give the person a chance to save up for a deposit and first month’s rent for a permanent living facility. Essence design has spent a lot of time coming up with innovative ideas for the exterior design of these container homes, which feature graphics related to forest life and a cityscape design. The mYPad initiative could help solve the housing crisis to a certain level while also taking care of the global problem of waste.
